MONOPRINTING WITH OPEN ACRYLICS
Using GOLDEN OPEN Acrylics allows lots of time to work on this easy, fun, and successful monoprinting process using gel plates. You can also create very inexpensive plates by using packets of dry gelatin. In this lesson plan we are using stencils cut from Yupo, but they can simply be paper!
TOOLS/MATERIALS
■ 4” Rubber roller
■ 8” x 8” White paper squares
■ 6” x 6” Gel plate
■ 2 Bird Stencils cut from Yupo paper
■ Tree stencil
■ Refillable paint marker, Mop tip
■ Round synthetic watercolor style brush
■ Low tack tape
GOLDEN PRODUCTS:
■ GOLDEN OPEN Phthalo Blue / G.S.
■ GOLDEN OPEN Naphthol Red Light
■ GOLDEN OPEN Hansa Yellow Opaque
■ GOLDEN High Flow Fluorescent Orange
STEP – BY – STEP:
Step 1. Place the gel plate on a ridged surface. Place a square of paper on each side of the gel plate, centering so when flipped over they will sit directly on the gel plate from the left and from the right. Tape the edges closest to the gel plate on the back side of the paper to create a hinge.
Step 2. Squeeze a bit of OPEN Hansa Yellow Opaque on the plate and roll it out evenly. Immediately place the tree stencil onto the wet surface. Using the right hinged paper, flip it onto the wet gel plate and rub the back with your fingers. Flip it back and remove the stencil from the plate. Now flip the left side onto the gel plate and print the “ghost” (the remaining paint) onto the paper.
Step 3. Roll out OPEN Naphthol Red Light on the plate. Place the tree stencil onto wet surface. Using the right hinged paper, flip it onto the wet gel plate and rub the back with fingers. Flip it back, and remove the stencil from the plate. Flip the left side onto the gel plate and print the ghost.
Step 4. Roll OPEN Phthalo Blue / G.S. on the gel plate. Place the two bird stencils on top of the wet OPEN. Print the right side of the paper. Remove the bird stencils.
Step 5. Use a brush and water to paint strokes inside of the bird silhouette on the gel plate. Leave some brush strokes and watery marks. Print the ghost side.
Optional: Use a refillable marker or a brush and highlight the birds with High Flow Fluorescent Orange.
Optional: Sometimes there is still plenty of paint on the plate after you have pulled the last ghost. You can go for one more ghost of the ghost!!
