PAINTING SUPPORTS: Cotton Canvas

  1. Thank you for the article.
I’m always interested in reading about cotton. However, in my 40 years of experience in oil painting, cotton is an unreliable substrate for painting. The main disadvantage of cotton is its intolerance to contact with oils in any of its forms. Regardless of how the cotton is treated, the oil still penetrates the cotton and destroys it from the inside. Flax is a completely different matter. It is much more stable and can withstand even direct contact with oil. Linen canvas for painting is definitely more reliable than cotton canvas.
I recommend using Belgian linen canvas. This is the highest quality linen for oil and acrylic painting.

    • Thank you for your response. We agree that linen is lovely. In our tests we found that three layers of our undiluted acrylic gesso would block oil from penetrating through the acrylic and into the cotton canvas or linen substrate. The testing involved placing multiple drops of linseed oil over the dry gesso, and checking the back of the canvas over a period of weeks and months to see if there is any oil strikethrough.
