Weave Direction & The Best Orientation For Stretching Fabric

  1. I use stretched, pre-primed canvas. When it’s loose, I mist the back (including under the stretcher bars) to tighten it. Why does washing canvas make it loose?

    • Natural fibers like linen and cotton swell when they are saturated with water. When they dry out, they can either maintain that expansion or they can shrink back to a state close to their original status. In general, after water saturation linen has a tendency to remain loose when it dries and cotton tends to shrink and resemble its original state. Individual bolts of fabric might behave differently.
