  1. Presumably, then, thixotropy is why a vortex mixer (which induces high shear stresses in fluids) is so effective at preparing fluid acrylics for use. In addition to mixing the pigment and medium better, it also reduces the viscosity of the emulsion.

    • Yes Doug, that is pretty much the idea here. High shear will drop the viscosity of the paint and mediums, which can be utilized in processing. It is also generally useful when you are working with paint on a palette for mixing of colors before applying paint. Rheology is really interesting actually!
